European standardisation organisations

The European standardisation organisations are CEN, CENELEC and ETSI.
CEN and CENELEC organise the preparation of European standards. They do not publish standards, instead leaving this task to their national members, who publish CEN and CENELEC standards as a part of their national collection.

European Committee for Standardization CEN http://www.cen.eu

CEN is a regional standardisation organisation, which organises European standardisation in all domains, except electrotechnology and telecommunications. The General Secretariat is located in Brussels. Members of CEN are:

European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization CENELEC http://www.cenelec.eu

CENELEC is an European standardisation organisation, which engages in the preparation of standards in the field of electrotechnology. It was founded in 1972. The General Secretariat is located in Brussels. Members of CENELEC are:

There are cooperation agreements with 47 European industrial unions and organisations.

EVS has been a full member of CENELEC since 1 January, 2004.

European Telecommunications Standards Institute ETSI http://www.etsi.org

ETSI is a worldwide organisation founded in 1988, the General Secretariat of which is located in Sophia Antipolis, France.

The number of members from one country is not limited, but full membership is only available for members of the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT). ETSI currently has 722 members from more than 60 countries from Europe and elsewhere.

ETSI standards are not published on paper; they are available for free on the internet.

ETSI’s national member since 1998 is the Estonian Technical Inspectorate.
