International standardisation organisations


International standardisation organisations are ISO, IEC and ITU.

International Organization for Standardization ISO

ISO is an international standardisation organisation, which was founded in 1946 and engages in standardisation in all domains, except electrotechnology and telecommunications.

Members of ISO are national standard organisations – one member from each country.

ISO is currently made up of 160 members which are divided into three categories:
full members 110;
corresponding members 40;
subscriber members 10.

Estonia was a corresponding member of ISO since January 1993 up to December 2010.

Since 2000, Estonia is represented in ISO by EVS.

Since January 2011 EVS is a ISO full member.

International Electrotechnical Commission IEC

IEC is an international standardisation organisation, which was founded in 1906 and engages in electrotechnical standardisation.

Members of IEC (also ISO) are national standard organisations – one member from each country.

IEC is currently made up of 81 members:
full members 60;
joined members 21.

Estonia is a joined member of IEC since August 1995.

Since 2000, Estonia is represented in IEC by EVS.

International Telecommunication Union ITU

ITU is an international (standardisation) organisation at the UN for the coordination of national as well as private sector telecommunication networks and services.

The International Telecommunication Union is divided into three sectors in its activity:
ITU-R radiocommunication sector,
ITU-T standardisation sector,
ITU-D development sector;
and ITU Telecom forum.

The members of ITU are the governments of member states and private sector enterprises.

ITU currently includes:
member states 192;
sector members 535;
joined sector members 151.

Estonia is represented in ITU since April 1992 by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications and the Technical Inspectorate.
