Single-user licence standards users FAQ

Why is there a need to limit the use of standards?

As the Estonian Centre for Standardisation receives the funds necessary for its activities mainly from the sale of standards, it is very important for us that the standards are not copied and illegally disseminated. Unfortunately, violation of the conditions of use established by us for using standards is quite wide-spread. Therefore, we are forced to apply restrictions that make illegal use difficult. Otherwise, we would not be able to offer services related to standards or would only be able to offer them in a smaller extent than currently.

What to do if I wish to use the standard bought with a single-user licence in my work as well as home computer?

A standard bought with a single-user licence is intended to be used in one computer. If you wish to use the standard alternately in several computers, you should acquire the standard with an intranet (multi-user) licence. A standard with an intranet licence allows for the use of the standard in the number of workplaces specified in the licence.

FileOpen plug-in functions in the following operating systems

Windows - Windows 7 or later, Server 2008 or later

Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.0 or later

Macintosh - Mac OS X (Installation guide)

Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.0 or later

In the case of each operating system, an plug-in intended for the specific operating systems must be installed in the computer. Further information and different plug-ins are available on FileOpen homepage.

Errors installing the FileOpen plug-In

Why are the pages of the standard empty and why does the user account show that the products have been downloaded?

You have probably not installed necessary FileOpen plug-in for opening the documents encrypted with FileOpen in your computer. The plug-in can be downloaded from FileOpen homepage.

Please make sure that you use Adobe Acrobat Reader DC to read the file and that the installed plug-in is appropriate for your operating system. Single-user licence standards cannot be viewed using other PDF readers.

Errors opening the PDF-document

What to do when encountering an error: Failed to load PDF document?

This error message usually means that the standard has been downloaded using Google Chrome browser. By default the Google Chrome displays PDF documents using its built-in PDF Viewer plug-in that unfortunately does not support files encrypted with FileOpen software. The problem can be solved in the following way:

1.Open Google Chrome

2.In the top right, click More , then Settings.

3.At the bottom, click Show Advanced Settings.

4.Under Privacy, click Content Settings

5.Under PDF Documents, check the box next to "Open PDF files in the default PDF viewer application."

Once you have made the change, PDF files should open in Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat, rather than in Google Chrome

Another option is to use some other browser, for example Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer.

I downloaded the FileOpen plug-in, but the standard is still empty after being opened?

Please check whether you:

  • in addition to downloading the plug-in, have also installed it on your computer (executed the downloaded file);
  • downloaded appropriate plug-in for your operating system from FileOpen website;
  • are using Adobe Acrobat Reader DC to view the document. The document cannot be viewed using other programmes.

What to do if the opening of the standard triggers the error message "There was an error contacting the server or the server's response could not be decoded. Please check your internet connection. If this error persists please contact the publisher and present the text of this message."

The FileOpen plug-in cannot connect to Internet to check the customer access privileges. Most common causes:

1. Lack of Internet connectivity or connectivity limitations due to a firewall that prevent Internet access to Acrobat Reader. Check if your firewall is blocking outgoing connections from the FileOpen plugin to remote port 443, but allowing them to remote port 80. You must set your firewall to allow this outgoing connection.

2.You are trying to view a standard with expired or missing offline grants. In this case the Plug-In must connect to the EVS website to reload the privileges. The other option is to update the plug-in version from FileOpen homepage.

What to do if the message “There was an error processing a page. There was a problem reading this document (110)” appears in the case of some pages when opening the standard?

If such a problem occurs, contact the customer support of the Estonian Centre for Standardisation, either by e-mail standard@evs.ee or phone at +372 60 550 60.

Why can’t the standard be opened in another computer?

You have bought a single-user licence standard. If you wish to use the standard in several computers, you should acquire the standards with an intranet (multi-user) licence that is not subject to such limitation. Single-user licence can used only in one computer and two printouts and one electronic backup copy are allowed to be made.

What can I do, if I have changed my computer and I am not able to open the standards anymore?

If You have changed your computer, please contact the customer support of the Estonian Centre for Standardisation, either by e-mail standard@evs.ee or phone at +372 60 550 60 and our customer service will transfer access rights of standards to another computer.

Please also make sure that you have installed the necessary plug-in from FileOpen into your new computer. Plug-in is available from FileOpen homepage.

How to update the FileOpen plug-in?

In some cases before installing a new version of the FileOpen Plug-In is necessary to remove the current version. (ERROR: Document Access Denied. A component required for viewing this document needs to be updated, please re-install the FileOpen plug-in.)

1. Remove the current plug-in version by using following link: http://plugin.fileopen.com/tools/FileOpenUninstallTool.exe

2. And then install the new version from FileOpen homepage:
http://plugin.fileopen.com/all.aspx

Can I make the backup copy of the standard with single-user licence?

You need to make the backup copy for the future case. If something happens to your computer and you have a backup copy, you can transfer the access rights to another personal computer with the assistance of our customer service.

Printing errors

If the document is not printed and no error message is displayed? (Error: This printer is not allowed for secure printing.
Do you want to change your choice?)

In Windows environment open Adobe Reader (version XI) and select the menu item Edit > Preferences > Security (Enhanced) to uncheck “Enable protected mode at Startup”. Reopen the document and print it. Example

For Adobe Reader X and previous versions, the box to uncheck is located at: Tools > Preferences > General. Reopen the document and print it. Example

What to do when printout is unreadable?

Open the standard with Adobe Reader, select from menu "File" submenu "Print" and then click "Advanced". On window that opens, check the "Print as Image" box and click OK and try to print again.

Why isn't it possible to print double-sided?

FileOpen plug-in does not forbid double-sided printing; however, it does restrict the possibilities to change the printer settings in the printing window of Adobe Reader. If the single-sided printing mode has been selected by default in your printer settings, it cannot be changed during the printing process. But the printer default settings can be changed before a document is opened by Adobe Reader. If the printer preference is changed to double-sided printing in the default printer settings, the documents encrypted by FileOpen can also be printed double-sided.

In the Windows operating system, the default printer settings can be changed by selecting "Settings" > "Devices" > Printer and scanners > choose the relevant printer > Manage and select "Printing preferences". From the appearing menu, you may select double-sided printing as the default printing mode. Example

NOTE! To change the settings, you may be required to have administrator rights.

Why can't colour-printing be used?

FileOpen plug-in does not limit the colour choices used for printing, but limits the possibilities to change the printer settings in the printing window of Adobe Reader. If you have a colour printer and cannot print a standard encrypted with FileOpen in colour, the most likely reason is that black and white print has been selected as the default printer setting. The problem should be overcome if you change the default printer settings to allow colour-printing.

In the Windows operating system, the default printer settings can be changed by selecting "Settings" > "Devices" > Printer and scanners > choose the relevant printer > Manage and select "Printing preferences". From the appearing menu, you may select colour printing as the default printing mode. Example

NOTE! To change the settings, you may be required to have administrator rights.

I printed only a few pages and when I tried to print again, I received a note that I had exceeded the allowed number of printings. Am I required to buy the standard again or can the situation be resolved somehow?

FileOpen also counts a partial printout as one used allowed printing. Thus, the entire text should be printed at one time. However, should it happen that you have used your allowed printings in such manner, please contact the customer support of the Estonian Centre for Standardisation, either by e-mail standard@evs.ee or phone at +372 60 550 60.

After downloading and saving the standard, that has not been printed yet, a warning appears that I have exceeded the allowed number of printings (2). What have I done wrong and what should be done next?

If you indeed have not made a printout, then it is a failure in the exchange of information between your computer and our system. In such an event, please contact the customer support of the Estonian Centre for Standardisation, either by e-mail standard@evs.ee or phone at +372 60 550 60.
