ISO 14118 specifies requirements for designed-in means aimed at preventing unexpected machine start-up to allow safe human interventions in danger zones. Keeping a machine in a stopped condition while people are present in danger zones is one of the most important conditions for the safe use of machinery and hence, one of the major aims of the machine designer and machine user.
ISO 14118 applies to unexpected start-up from all types of energy sources:
— power supply, electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic,
— stored energy due to gravity, compressed springs,
— external influences from the wind.
It does not specify performance levels or safety integrity levels for safety-related parts of control systems. While available means to prevent unexpected start-up are identified, ISO 14118 does not specify the means for the prevention of unexpected machine start-up for specific machines. The text of ISO 14118:2017 has been approved in Europe as EN ISO 14118:2018 without any changes.
