Lights are taken for granted but essential to our comfort and safety.
While people in developed nations are used to switching lights on and off, many countries still do not have electricity from the grid.
Instead, they rely on either dangerous and polluting kerosene lamps or off-grid solar-powered lighting.
A new edition of a foundational standard
Lighting might be taken for granted in developed economies, but it can still cause accidents if not used safely or installed in a way that meets the strictest safety requirements.
Recently published EVS-EN IEC 60598-1 specifies general safety requirements for luminaires that work with supply voltages up to 1000 V.
The standard is regularly updated to take into account improvements in safety relating to state-of-the-art technology. These improvements are incorporated with revisions and amendments on an ongoing basis.
EVS-EN IEC 60598-1 is aimed at the lighting industries for the correct design of luminaires, but also at test houses for certification and market surveillance authorities to verify the safety of products on the market.
