EN 71-8 specifies requirements and test methods for activity toys.
The standard also specifies requirements for:
— separately sold accessories for, and components of activity toys,
— separately sold swing elements that are ready for use on or in combination with an activity toy,
— construction packages for activity toys including components used to build activity toys in accordance with a scheduled building instruction.
EN 71-8 does not apply to playground equipment intended for public use, which is covered by the EN 1176 standards. Bow-mounted rocking toys, such as rocking horses, are also excluded, as they are subject to specific requirements in EN 71-1.
Water-related products exceeding a defined depth are outside the scope. Toy pools with a maximum water depth of more than 400 mm, as well as pools without play elements exceeding this depth, are addressed under other standards, including the EN 16582 and EN 16927. The document also excludes toy slides designed for use with domestic in-ground swimming pools and trampolines for domestic use, the latter being covered separately in EN 71-14.
In addition, powered blowers used to continuously inflate inflatable activity toys fall outside the scope of EN 71-8, as they are treated as household appliances under separate safety requirements.
