EN 60529 determines the level of protection that enclosures provide for electrical equipment with a voltage of no more than 72,5 kV. It provides definitions for the different levels of protection that these enclosures can offer, including protection against people coming into contact with hazardous parts inside the enclosure, protection against solid foreign objects entering the enclosure, and protection against water damage to the equipment inside.
EN 60529 also provides specific designations for these different levels of protection and outlines the requirements for each designation. Finally, it includes testing procedures to ensure that the enclosures meet these requirements. This standard deals only with enclosures that are in all other respects suitable for their intended use as specified in the relevant product standard and which from the point of view of materials and workmanship ensure that the claimed degrees of protection are maintained under the normal conditions of use.
EN 60529 is also applicable to empty enclosures provided that the general test requirements are met and that the selected degree of protection is suitable for the type of equipment to be protected. EN 60529 covers measures to protect the enclosure and the equipment inside it from external influences or conditions, such as mechanical impacts, corrosion, corrosive solvents, fungus, pests, solar radiation, ice, moisture, and explosive atmospheres. It also covers protection against contact with hazardous moving parts external to the enclosure, such as fans. This standard does not cover barriers or obstacles that are external to the enclosure and are not attached to it.
