IEC 62133-1 specifies requirements and tests for the safe operation of portable sealed secondary nickel cells and batteries containing alkaline electrolyte. It covers both intended use and reasonably foreseeable misuse. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition of IEC 62133-1 published in 2017. It is a technical revision.

This edition of IEC 62133-1 includes the following significant technical changes:

  1. removal of the definition "secondary battery",
  2. removal of the definition "portable battery",
  3. removal of the definition "portable cell",
  4. replacement of the single term "room temperature" with 20 °C ± 5 °C,
  5. modification of Figure 1.

IEC 62133-1:2026 text has been approved in Europe as EN IEC 62133-1:2026 without any changes.
