This Estonian standard provides recommendations on the fundamental requirements for the planning and design of gas pipelines operating at pressure above 16 bar, with the aim of ensuring reliability, public safety, environmental protection, and the prevention of accidents during the construction and operation of gas pipelines.
The standard applies only to the design of gas transmission pipelines located on-land and is intended for rigid steel gas pipelines used for transporting gas that meets grid‑gas quality requirements (including, for example, natural gas, biogas, and synthetic methane). This standard is not suitable for gas pipelines made of materials other than steel.
The recommendations given in this standard may be used for the reconstruction of existing gas pipelines operating at pressure above 16 bar, or for calculating safety distances for structures to be built in their vicinity, provided that the technical condition of the existing pipeline has been thoroughly assessed.
If the technical condition of previously constructed gas pipelines operating at pressure above 16 bar has not been thoroughly examined, the reconstruction or calculation of safety distances for nearby structures must be based on the technical regulations and standards that were used during the construction of those pipelines.
This standard is not suitable for the design of compressed natural gas (CNG) and hydrogen (H₂) pipelines.
